Srinagar is the capital of the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir that is administered by India. It is located in Kashmir Valley and lies on the banks of the Jhelum River. Recently, the chance discovery of a seven-room royal hammam (oriental bath) in here set a new example on the architectural excellence of the Mughal era. Officials in charge said, the bath (hammam) with sitting rooms, bathtubs and an excellent central heating arrangement by hot water circulation through copper pipes was discovered. The recent discovery was made in the well-known Shalimar Garden.
The Shalimar Gardens is an exclusive sign of Mughal gardens. It is situated on the eastern bank the Dal Lake, 12 km from the heart of the city. It was built by the famous Mughal emperor, Jahangir, in the lake city of Srinagar, India in 1616. It was built and specially designed for his most loving beloved Mehrunissa. Among all his 20 wives, Mehrunissa, titled Nur Jahan, was the talented and the most favorite wife. After completing the construction of the garden Jahangir was said to have recited the legendary Persian express ion, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this, it is this, it is this.”
According to Sheikh Shabir Ahmad, the floriculturist in charge of the garden, at the time of shifting soil one place to another then the discovery was made. He said, “Gardeners were shifting soil from one area of the garden when they discovered a construction, which later turned out to be a seven-room hammam.” He added “We also discovered earthen vessels, bathtubs, toilets, sitting and retiring rooms inside the construction. It is definitely a royal hammam built for Emperor Jehangir and his wife Nur Jahan.”
The garden authorities and administration, in consultation with the archaeological department, are now in the process of restoring the historic royal bath to its original glory without disturbing the basic excellence of its exclusive layout.
