Tourism Industry Prepare for this Summer
Tourism industry is one of the most affected sectors by current economic melt down. Like other states New Mexico is also struggling with it tourism business. Current statistics says hotel occupancies got anemic in past several months. However, numerous hotels are still hiring.
The Department of Workforce Solutions (DWS) data indicates that the leisure & hospitality business in Albuquerque got more than 300 new jobs during February to March. Additionally, this sector added nearly100 new jobs in Santa Fe. Many hotel managers now see light and hope at the finishing end of the recessionary tunnel. They are confident enough that potential travelers and visitors will discard this economic doldrums and they must plan vacations in the summer. On the other hand some think it’s only part of staffing up for the pick time.
A number of casinos are hiring, too in the Albuquerque region. Among them, Sandia Casino & Resort, Santa Ana Star Casino are notable. The Sheraton Uptown just finished a special multi-million buck renovation. General Manager Sandy Arnold said this hotel had laid off many staff during 2007 as the construction started and by this time it back on line September 2008, any most of those employees returned. It’s now looking to fill up 10 to 15 positions in different positions, like executive and sous chefs, catering and housekeeping as well as sales. The experts say current hiring indicating that the sector is going to develop its economic condition.
